Arts & Sciences Competition Theme – Largesse
The giving of small gifts called ‘largesse’ to show favour and thank others is a strong tradition in the SCA, and was considered a virtue in the Middle Ages.
These gifts can be given by anyone, but those in roles with ceremonial responsibilities, like Royalty and Baronages, are often called upon to give a great amount of largesse. This is because they have so many people to thank and recognise. To help our new B&B stock their chest with beautiful gifts, our A&S competition will focus on these small items.
Competition details:
- Enter an item or items suitable for largesse.
- All entries should be suitable for airplane carry-on luggage, and if fragile, should be submitted with appropriate packaging.
- Documentation is welcome, though not required. It should fit on a single piece of paper.
- The collected entries will be given to the incoming Baron and Baroness in court at the end of the event.
- To be judged by a panel of 5 former landed Barons and Baronesses and Royal peers.
- 3 prizes will be available: most technically accomplished, most historically accurate, and most suitable as largesse.
What to wear:
An attempt at pre-17th century clothing. If you need help with clothing, contact the hospitaller to organise loaner garb.
Please note:
Participants are reminded that if they are unwell or showing cold or flu-like symptoms, they must not attend.
