Arts and Sciences

In the SCA, we group all non-combat skills and knowledge under the very broad heading of ‘Arts & Sciences’ (commonly referred to as A&S).

Example activities

In the workshop

  • Armouring
  • Blacksmithing
  • Fletching
  • Metalwork
  • Leatherwork
  • Pottery
  • Woodwork

Foodstuffs

  • Brewing
  • Cheese making
  • Cooking
  • Gardening

Textiles

  • Costuming
  • Knitting
  • Embroidery
  • Spinning
  • Weaving

Creative arts

  • Calligraphy
  • Painting

Entertainment

  • Games
  • Dancing
  • Singing
  • Theatre

…and pretty much anything else you can think of. If it’s a skill people used in the Middle Ages, someone in the SCA has figured out how.

Getting involved

So what does that actually mean, in terms of things you can do with our group? At various events throughout the year, experts from our group will teach classes on some of these skills based on interest from our members. At our regular meetings, you’ll find various members of the Barony chatting as they work on their own projects, and you’re always welcome to bring something of your own along or ask for advice. Once you’ve built up some skills of your own, you can enter your work in competitions at our larger events. You can read more about A&S at the official Kingdom website

If you want to get involved, come along on Sunday, check out our Facebook group or get in touch with our Arts and Sciences Minister at arts@politarchopolis.lochac.sca.org.

Recognition of skill

The Arts and Sciences are recognised as one of the pillars of the SCA by awards within the Barony, and awards in the Kingdom of Lochac, our parent group.
